Tel Aviv, September 29, 2013. Under the motto “No Project = No Entry”, 180 of Israel’s top technological innovators, entrepreneurs, makers & designers, will gather for 52 hours straight at the 9th annual Geekcon un-conference, taking place near Caesaria between the 3rd to the 5th of October. During these 52 hours the participants will team up to create and build various innovative projects in the domains of software, robotics, 3D printing, technology, Internet, mechanics and science. Geekcon will culminate on Saturday (October 5) afternoon, when the participants will present their projects to their fellow geeks and select external guests.
The Geekcon platform challenges participants to overcome technical barriers and quickly build highly innovative creations in a very short time. A typical project can be anything that demonstrates innovation and creativity involving technological components. Examples of past projects include using brainwaves to steer a vehicle, the Laughing Swing, The Social Urinal, a Tomato Tank, an Automatic Bartender (to maintain a constant state of drunkenness), a “Superman” Simulator, an Automatic Grill (from used computer parts), and a Kitesurfing Simulator.
So far the platform has contributed to the creation of several start ups, and generation of business of over $160 million.
Examples of announced projects for this year include:
Brain-Machine Interactions, a Dough Alarm (sounds when duogh has doubled in volume), an AR drone that delivers flowers, The Automatic Politician, QuadBarf (the result of flying in a quadcopter wearing a stereophonic helmet), a Brain Dictations Device (automatic writing of moods, dictated straight from the brain), a Mechanic Exoskeleton, a Portable Cat and Dog detector, A Hummus Whipping Machine, and an Underwater Musical Instrument.
The complete list of projects can be found here
Geekcon was inspired by such famous innovative gatherings as Burning Man and FooCamp.
The Geekcon platform, driven by the guideline: “hacking the digital lifestyle”, started 9 years ago in 2005. It is a non-profit, invitation only platform, dedicated to the promotion of “out of the box” creativity and hands-on innovation. The annual un-conference, often referred to as a “summer camp” for Geeks, attracts a critical mass of Israel’s top entrepreneurs and technological innovators.
Participation in GeekCon is by invitation only.
The Geekcon creativity has attracted some big-name sponsors including General Motors, Microsoft, Intel, Yahoo!, Autodesk, Google and Amdocs who will all send participants and equipment to the event.
GeekCon is run by a team of volunteers, most of whom are serial entrepreneurs, including Ilan Graicer, Eden Shochat, Gilli Cegla, Nimrod Lehavi, Shahar Zrihen, Inbar Raz, Eyal Hershko, Yoram Avidan, and others.
